Another Time, Another Place
Living and working downtown during a volatile period of cultural upheaval, Bethany Eden Jacobson photographed a city alive with risk, improvisation, and possibility. Her images capture a moment when anything could happen—and often did.
The book chronicles a scene shaped by individuals working outside the traditional art world -- Street Culture was being born -- Patti Astor’s Fun Gallery dismantled art-world gatekeeping bringing graffiti artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Rammellzee into the spotlight; the Goode Brothers’ Area nightclub, reinvented nightlife as immersive installation art; and the abandoned West Side piers, taken over by radical artists including David Wojnarowicz, created site-specific works fusing sexuality, survival, and protest.
